SCION – Scalability, Control and Isolation On Next-generation Networks – was developed by the Network Security Group at ETH Zurich. In today’s internet, the path a data packet takes is neither transparent nor controllable, which leaves communication exposed to route hijacking and unwanted redirects. SCION turns this around: the sender selects the paths, every path is cryptographically verifiable, and the architecture runs alongside the existing internet infrastructure.

Communication takes place within isolation domains – clearly defined network domains governed by shared trust rules and cryptographic policies, in which only authorised participants can reach each other. The SCION Association, founded by ETH Zurich, the Swiss National Bank and SIX, drives the adoption of the architecture as an open standard.

SwissPKI^TM is the first business class PKI product in the market to support the SCION technology. Together with SIX, libC Technologies implemented the public key infrastructure for SCION – the trust anchor of the Secure Swiss Finance Network (SSFN), launched by SIX and the Swiss National Bank to enable secure, flexible and resilient data communication between the affiliated Swiss banking institutes.
